Helping Asia transform itself – AIIB, from the perspective of Erik Berglöf, Chief Economist

Sweden-China Trade Council is proud to present Mr Erik Berglöf, Chief Economist, AIIB, since September 2020, as our speaker for a webinar on May 6, 2021.

AIIB began operations in 2016 with 57 founding members (37 regional and 20 non-regional), among them Sweden. By the end of 2020, there were 103 approved members representing approximately 79 percent of the global population and 65 percent of global GDP.

AIIB is mandated to focus on infrastructure, now including health and education. Operating on the foundations of robust banking principles, high project standards, multilateral governance and backed by a global and diversified shareholder base, AIIB strive for financial and environmental sustainability.

During the webinar, Erik Berglöf will touch upon the following topics;

  • What is the background of AIIB, reasons for why it was set up and vision and mission statement?
  • What types of activities is AIIB involved in?
  • What are the types of projects and sectors?
  • Lending – general criteria: duration, minimum amount, types of borrowers?
  • Possibilities for Swedish companies to be involved as suppliers in projects financed by AIIB?

Erik Berglöf, AIIB’s inaugural Chief Economist. Prior to joining AIIB in September 2020, he was Director of the Institute of Global Affairs, London School of Economics, and Chief Economist of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development from 2006 to 2015, where he was part of creating and co-led the Vienna Initiative, a European crisis response team credited with mitigating the impact of the 2008 Global Financial Crisis. He is an expert in transition economics and institutional transformation through private sector development. He holds a PhD in Financial Economics and an MA in Business and Economics, both from the Stockholm School of Economics. Erik Berglöf is a national of Sweden.
