Reflections from a female perspective running an international company in China

Elisabeth Lindström-Dupuy, General Manager, Sales Area North Asia, Sandvik Coromant.

China is one of the world’s top countries regarding executive gender equality. It now has the world’s highest proportion of women working in senior management positions, the second-largest only to Thailand, percentage of female CEOs, and a full half of the world’s self-made female billionaires. In an age of unbridled aspiration, an increasing number of Chinese women are changing China’s business landscape.

We have invited Elisabeth Lindström-Dupuy, General Manager, Sales Area North Asia, Sandvik Coromant, to reflect on her own experience with Sandvik for almost 25 years whereof nine of those in China. What are the drivers and what are the challenges of being a woman in mechanical engineering in China?  Elisabeth will also touch upon how running a foreign operation in China has developed over the years with a more localized work force. What are the effects and how has Sandvik managed these changes?

Elisabeth Lindström-Dupuy was born in Lund, 1964 and moved with her parents to Germany in 1974, to take the Germany Abitur 10 years later. After finishing mechanical engineering studies at Luleå technical university in 1993, including one Erasmus year in France, she took up PhD studies within industrial organization and product development.

Elisabeth has since 1995 worked for Sandvik, the majority for Sandvik Coromant, with both manufacturing and sales of metal cutting tools. Through Sandvik, Elisabeth Lindström-Dupuy has a broad and solid experience of the engineering industry and its different needs in both Europe and China (9 years). Strategic work, business development, productivity improvements and change management have been important parts of her assignments, both as manager of production units in France, Germany and China, but also as manager within the sales organization. In her current job as head of the sales organization in northern Asia, business development and changes in ways of working towards digitalization and sustainability have been the focus, as well as M/A assignments, where her role is the relationship building.

Elisabeth Lindström-Dupuy has two daughters, 16 & 21 years old, together with a French husband, working at EDF in France.
