Insight of the week:

Throughout the week, the agenda of mainstream media outlets has been almost entirely dominated by coverage of the leadup to and eventual celebration of the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China (CPC). Key events honoring the centenary this week included a performance and firework display at the National Stadium on Monday, the conferring of the July 1 medal on Wednesday, and the parade and speech by General Secretary Xi Jinping on Thursday’s anniversary. During the speech made by Xi, he referenced notable moments in history and also looked to China’s future. Xi called for strengthening the great unity of the Chinese people to strive to bring about a great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation, which is viewed as a historical inevitability in the transformation process of China. He emphasized that China has gone from standing up, referencing the speech given by Mao on the founding of the People’s Republic of China, to growing prosperous and becoming strong. The speech also embodied the confidence and willingness to confront issues head on that have become intrinsic to Xi’s time as leader. When speaking on sensitive issues such, Xi underscored the hardline stance of the party. He then noted that if any external forces attempt to unfairly challenge China’s governance and sovereignty, they will be blocked by the great wall formed by the iron will of the flesh and blood of China’s 1.4 billion people. This speech has been well received by a population that views the Party as responsible for China’s increased international recognition and relative success at containing the COVID-19 pandemic. These factors, among others, have led analysts to believe that local support for the Party’s leadership may have reached an all-time high. The media has continued the air of celebration as the week ends by looking forward at what the next 100 years under the party could look like.
