Sweden-China Forum for Sustainable and Responsible Business – seminar in Stockholm on September 9, 2016

Sustainability has become a more and more important issue for Chinese companies. The demand for more responsible business practices in China and by Chinese companies abroad has grown. With China’s increasing overseas investments, companies are learning that responsible business conduct go hand in hand with profitability, by reducing risks to operations, preserving reputation, motivating and retaining employees, obtaining a social licence to operate, and building investor trust.

Sweden and China have collaborated on corporate social responsibility (CSR) for many years, exchanging experiences and knowledge. Since 2010, there is a Centre for CSR at the Embassy of Sweden in Beijing, with a mission to identify and address challenges for companies in implementing CSR. A new memorandum of understanding on CSR was signed by the Swedish Minister for Enterprise and Innovation and the Chinese Vice Minister of Commerce in 2015. As part of the work plan agreed between MOFCOM and the CSR Centre, a delegation from the Ministry of Commerce (MOFCOM) and China International Contractors Association (CHINCA) will visit Sweden in September. The delegation includes members of CHINCA representing some of China’s largest state-owned enterprises within the infrastructure and construction sector. The delegation has a strong interest in sustainable infrastructure and investments, and in learning how Swedish companies work with sustainability risks and challenges abroad, as well as from interesting projects in Sweden.

Topics that will be discussed include CSR drivers and trends in Sweden and China, labour relations and social dialogue, stakeholder engagement, and anti-corruption.
